The first kingdom in history was born in Nubia.
This kingdom, which today would be located in northern Sudan and southern Egypt, existed from 5900 BC - nearly 8000 years ago! For over 200 years this was the only monarchy on the entire planet.
There was an ancient writing system used throughout Nubia during this time. The symbols that were used formed the basis of the famous hieroglyphics of Kemet. Many artefacts from this kingdom have been found by archaeologists. Hundreds of golden necklaces, rings and painted pots with art and hieroglyphics on them have been uncovered. Even an object thought to be a board game has been found in Nubia.
As Nubia was home to the world’s first kingdom, many other African people journeyed to the region to trade. This allowed the kingdom to grow richer and expand its borders. Eventually, some of the people from Ancient Nubia migrated further north to found the most famous ancient civilisation ever - Kemet.
